Before Move-In Day

What to Bring

We encourage families to focus on bringing the items that make the apartment feel familiar and comforting. Moving often includes thoughtful downsizing, and we understand that deciding what will fit can feel emotional. Our team is always happy to help you plan a space that feels open, safe, and truly like home. Clothing, favorite blankets, cherished photos, small pieces of furniture, and meaningful keepsakes all help create a genuine sense of comfort without overcrowding the apartment.

Residents typically bring:

Clothing and shoes

Personal toiletries and grooming items

Favorite décor such as framed photos or artwork

A comfortable chair or small furniture pieces if desired

Personal electronics such as a TV, radio, or tablet

Apartments are designed to be comfortable and functional, and our team can help families understand what furnishings are already provided in each community. We also guide families in terms of items that may not be appropriate for safety reasons, such as large appliances or certain heating devices. For added peace of mind, we recommend keeping valuables or irreplaceable items stored in a secure location outside of the community.

Apartment Personalization

Personalization is always encouraged. We want each apartment to reflect the resident’s personality, history, and preferences. Families are welcome to decorate with photos, artwork, bedding, and familiar furniture pieces. For safety and building standards, we may have simple guidelines around wall mounting, electrical items, and large modifications. Our team walks families through these details ahead of move-in so there are no surprises. The goal is to balance comfort, dignity, and safety in a way that feels supportive rather than restrictive.

Documentation

We understand that paperwork can feel overwhelming. Our team guides families step by step through the process. Prior to move-in, families can expect to complete:

A residency agreement and financial documentation

Care assessment forms to help us understand routines and preferences

Emergency contact information

Physician forms or medication lists as needed

Where possible, we provide documents in advance so families can review them at their own pace. Our goals go beyond a smooth move-in day — we strive for a transition that feels organized, respectful, and truly supportive for both residents and their families.

On move-in day, our friendly and professional staff will be here for you and your family throughout the day. There’s no set schedule and everything can happen at your own pace, so don’t worry about adhering to certain times. We’re here to support you on this important day — and of course, welcome you to your new senior living community.

After Move-In Day

Adjusting to Senior Living

Getting used to a major change always takes time. During the adjustment period, you and your family may experience emotional ups and downs as you reflect on your old home and explore your new one — and that’s completely natural. Over time, you’ll build a routine you can depend on, as well as relationships with your new neighbors and the Plaza staff, and things will start to feel consistent and familiar. You’ll find you can continue with many of the activities you love, just in a new location.

How Families Stay Involved at The Plaza

Moving into Hawaii senior care doesn’t mean losing family connections. Plaza residents are encouraged to stay in communication with their loved ones and tell them all about their experiences at The Plaza — and of course, family members are always welcome to come and visit, including keiki. Visiting family members can become familiar faces to your neighbors and may even become part of community life.
